Leveraging Partitioned External Tables: Primer and Practical Examples
Oracle Database 12is the first release to offer the capability to access a file in HDFS or HIVE format as an external table. Through live and recorded demonstrations, this session will explain how an Oracle DBA can leverage these new features to gather data in tabular format from these file formats while leveraging the best tool ever designed to filter, sort, aggregate, and report information: Structured Query Language. Through presentations and online demonstrations, this session will:
• Review the growing need to access big data in different file formats stored in NoSQL databases and data lakes.
• Illustrate how to leverage Oracle Big Data SQL to access and process data in other formats.
• Provide practical boundaries for leveraging these techniques to access data in various external formats

Agenda:
1. Big Data and IoT: Beyond Simplistic Rows and Columns
2. A Sharper Knife You Already Own: The Case for SQL vs. NoSQL
3. New EXTERNAL Table Drivers: ORACLE_HDFS and ORACLE_HIVE
4. Leveraging Partitioning and Parallelism with EXTERNAL Tables
5. Practical Examples of Leveraging Big Data Access Drivers
6. Now, a Warning: Limitations of Big Data SQL and Its New Drivers

Oracle Database 12.2 Application Containers
The single most important new feature in Database 12.2 is the new application containers that come with the multitenant option. The container database architecture and multitenancy were introduced into the Oracle database in version 12.1 and the capabilities have been vastly expanded in release 12.2, combining brilliant new technology with a solid business case.
This session by ACE Director Alumnus Daniel Morgan will present both the concept and the reality with a demonstration, live in SQL*Plus, of the entire process, and all of the code, required to implement a container database with application containers.

One Ring to Rule Them All: Consolidating Messaging into Slack
Discover how Bodybuilding.com simplified the lives for its on-call teams, lessened the burden on senior staff, shortened issue resolution times, and discovered a new way to share diagnostic information using Slack, a cloud-based team messaging and collaboration tool. Slack opens up new ways to manage, monitor, and control database environments.
We'll discuss future plans, including Slack-driven automation and natural language queries that will distribute or eliminate many low-level tasks and tactical work, freeing DBAs to focus on more important efforts.
Learning Objectives:
• Learn how we used Slack to unify messaging and notifications into a single interface, providing greater control over how, what, when, and why we're informed of events.
• Discover how Bodybuilding.com leveraged Slack to solve common complaints by on-call teams—alert fatigue, false alarms, being tied to a laptop or VPN, compartmentalization, and low or limited visibility of issues.
• See how to use the Slack API to interact with a database to allow remote management, automation, and natural language query and control by end users.

Oracle Optimizer—Best Practices for Managing Optimizer Statistics
During the optimization of a SQL statement, the Optimizer relies heavily on statistics to estimate the number of rows produced by each of the SQL operators. The quality of the statistics for the objects referenced in the statement greatly affects the quality of the plan. Statistics maintenance is a challenge all DBAs must face in order to prevent the execution plan from becoming suboptimal. This presentation includes information on the features introduced in both Oracle Database 11g and 12c to improve the quality and efficiency of statistics gathering, as well as strategies for managing statistics in various database environments. These strategies include how to use dynamic sampling and when, and how, to manually set statistics directly versus collecting them.

Security for Oracle DBAs and Developers
Almost every major break in to an Oracle Database has been performed by persons with a valid user ID and password. These are attacks that cannot be prevented by a LDAP, a firewall, or licensing another product. The best Oracle Database security can be obtained by properly configuring the tools you have already licensed from Oracle, but which were not enabled, by default, during installation. This presentation by Oracle ACE Director Alumnus Daniel Morgan will focus on proper configuration of the tools Oracle has been distributing for more than a decade, including live demos in SQL*Plus.

Taking ASH Analysis to the Next Level—Plan Change and Parsing Detection/Analysis
Sometimes snapshot time-based (AWR) performance data does not provide the level of detail we need to diagnose performance issues. Usually Oracle Active Session History (ASH) data solves this limitation by providing session-level sample data. However, we can go further by creatively using ASH data to do things that are not possible using standard ASH and time-based analysis. This presentation will demonstrate how to use ASH data to pinpoint SQL plan changes. Also, it will show you how to detect parsing issues before they show up in the wait interface. The presentation includes demonstrations and where to get the free SQL, so you can take your ASH analysis to the next level!

Oracle Privilege History
Have you ever dropped a table, user, or role by mistake and tried to restore privileges but couldn't remember what to grant or to whom? You queried the dba views only to find what is currently granted, not what was granted. Now, your only option is to guess which grants to make and then wait for people to complain, or processes to fail so you can figure out which grants were missed. Flashback is helpful, but won’t always solve the problem at hand. Creating a historical record of privileges will allow you to restore the correct suite of privileges to users or roles quickly and accurately without guessing. This presentation will provide steps to set up a process to track privileges historically.

Understanding and Optimizing Oracle Memory Serialization Access (Latches and Mutexes)
Oracle memory serialization control is core to Oracle database operations. One of the most fascinating topics in Oracle internals and performance optimization is memory serialization. We will look at when serialization is used, how it works, how we can influence its operation, and how we can diagnose problems. But, it's a complex situation. To get the upper hand on serialization control, this presentation will explore the lock (a little), the latch (a lot), and the mutex (a whole lot). Topics include performance diagnosis, how Oracle implements latches and mutexes, and the related internal algorithms. Special attention is given to the library cache mutex operations. This is a very practical yet deep internals presentation, filled with amazing discoveries about how Oracle works.

This session takes a deeper look at what the Oracle 12cR2 optimizer is actually doing “under the covers” when it makes its decisions to process a query against IMCS-resident and nonresident tables, including improved In-Memory Joins, leveraging Join Groups, taking advantage of In-Memory Expressions, and utilizing In-Memory Filtering effectively. We’ll look at some real-world performance improvement metrics obtained against an Exadata Express OPC environment that shows how best to tackle using these newest DBIM features.
